Despite its funny name, "vinegar syndrome" is a very serious problem in the world of preservation, because it doesn't just damage the affected film reels: it spreads to surrounding materials with extreme ease.

Aware of this threat, we launched a collaboration with the Department of Chemistry of the University of Florence to seek an effective, safe and sustainable solution.
The research project particularly involves Marianna De Sanctis, head of the Film Repair department at our Bologna laboratory, and also relies on the participation of the Cineteca di Bologna, which makes its enormous film heritage available.
Experimentation with a polymer sponge is yielding very promising results, but the team is also considering preservation systems based on nanoparticles.
